Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT): Causes, Symptoms and Management

DEFINITION: DVT is clot formation in the lower leg due to slowing of venous or blood circulation.

MAIN CAUSE:

  • Poor circulation of blood in the legs
  • Bed rest
  • After major surgery

SPECIFIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Blue colour of foot due to poor blood circulation
  • Swelling of leg or vein on the leg
  • Pain or tenderness in the area
  • Poor movement of limb

SPECIFIC MANAGEMENT

  • Refer to doctor/Clinic
  • Bed rest with mild pressure exercise
  • Put on elastic stockings
  • Lift end of bed with bed blocks
  • Put bed cradle to remove heavy bedding from leg
  • Mild passive exercises of feet
  • Do not cross legs
  • Do not put pillows under knees in bed
  • Early ambulation after surgery or sit person up in chair for short periods a day

COMPLICATIONS

  • Pulmonary embolism
