“No, it’s not as simple as emptying the bottle onto your neck”
Finding your signature scent is only half the job. Once you’ve landed that elusive fragrance, knowing how and where to spray it will make a big difference (and, no, it’s not as simple as emptying the bottle onto your neck). We quizzed the industry’s top female perfumers for tips on how to scent yourself with style.
Wear It In The Right Place
Don’t feel that you have to wear your signature scent on your skin. A great alternative – especially for those who have sensitive skin – is to scent your clothes. “A lovely way to wear fragrance is to apply it to the lining of your jacket,” says Lyn Harris, co-founder of London perfumers Miller Harris. “When a gentleman takes his jacket off at a restaurant you get a wonderful waft of something tasteful and chic.”
Don’t Just Say It, Spray It
We’re assuming you’ve found a cologne that mirrors your personality. If your scent makes a big statement then you had better be prepared to match it. Anything less and the fragrance will overtake you. Whatever you’ve settled on, make sure it sticks. “Wear fragrance after a shower, when the skin is still warm and slightly damp. The perfume will settle beautifully,” advises Linda Pilkington of Ormonde Jayne. “Spray over the neck and chest area and get ready to walk the walk.”
Get Experimental
If you are comfortable with wearing fragrance on your skin then get experimental. A few drops on the wrists or behind the neck and ears is usually enough. “But if you’re more adventurous and want to try other parts of your body, then there’s the back of your knees, the bottom of your back… they’re fine too!” says Camille Goutal of famed Parisian perfumery Annick Goutal.
Do Not Be Forgotten
“A man should wear his fragrance wherever he wants to be kissed,” says Emilie Coppermann, the perfumer behind niche creations for The Different Company as well as Lalique, Paco Rabanne and Ferrari. Alternatively, a shirt or scarf will do. “Something that a guy can ‘forget’ somewhere so that he won’t be forgotten,” she adds.
Something In The Hair
Hair is another great alternative to skin. “If men have a lot of hair or long hair in particular, then they should spray it too — hair holds fragrance well,” says Azzi Glasser, the perfume designer behind fragrances for everyone from Agent Provocateur to Alexander McQueen.
Less Is More
Last but certainly not least: spray with restraint! “Men should always wear fragrance in a very restrained way. Never wear too much – even if it’s a wonderful perfume. People will hate it if it’s overpowering,” says Mathilde Laurent of Cartier. So if you like strong, punchy fragrances (and there’s nothing wrong with that), just stick to one small spray – not three or four.
