One of the major headache of women during that time of the period is the pain associated with it. Many women actually don’t understand why they should experience pain during menstruation but if you understand what really goes on in there, then you will know, it’s obvious every woman will experience some kind of pain during that time of the period.
Usually, this is a normal thing, but in some women, the pain is really unbearable and these are the women we wish to address in this piece. If you’re a woman reading this, then you should you’re not the only one involved in this, every woman experiences it. But if yours is very painful, then we wish to reveal to you reasons why you experience that pain.
The Menstrual Cycle
Before you find out what causes menstrual pain, it might help to understand a little bit more about the menstrual cycle.
The menstrual cycle is the natural process that happens every month as your body gets ready for pregnancy. The typical menstrual cycle is 28-30 days long. At the start of each cycle, the uterus begins to develop a soft lining of blood-rich tissue in preparation for an egg that will be released from the ovaries (this is called ovulation). If fertilised, the egg would develop into a baby. If fertilisation does not occur, then the blood-rich lining of the womb is shed, as it’s no longer needed. This is called a period, or menstruation.
Why menstrual pain happens
During the time that the lining of the womb is being shed, you might experience some cramping pain in your lower stomach, your lower back and at the top of your legs – this is menstrual pain.
The reason you feel pain is that your womb is contracting (or squeezing) to remove the lining that it no longer needs because you are not pregnant. It’s thought that pain-causing chemicals, called prostaglandins, are involved in helping the womb contract. Unfortunately, they also make you feel pain.
For some women and girls their menstrual pain can be mild, but in others the pain can be stronger. No one really knows why, but it could be that if you have stronger than moderate pain you may have too many prostaglandins or be more sensitive them. This can make the womb squeeze especially hard, reducing the blood supply to your womb and causing even more pain.
So now you know menstrual pain is a perfectly natural part of being female. For most women and girls, menstrual pain is nothing to worry about.
How To Prevent Or Minimize The Pain
- Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat. Limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine, salt, and sweets.
- Begin or maintain a moderate exercise schedule.
- Reduce stress in your life. Although stress does not cause menstrual cramps, reducing stress can make your symptoms less severe.
- Do not smoke or use other tobacco products.
- Try biofeedback or yoga. Both therapies teach relaxation skills.
- Try acupuncture or acupressure.
